Programa Semear/ Manuela Cavadas

The Semear is a program for the management of knowledge in the semiarid region of Northeastern Brazil, whose objective is to facilitate the access to knowledge, innovations and good practices that can be adopted and replicated by the rural population to improve their living conditions and to promote sustainable and equitable development in the region.

Marked by irregular rainfall, the semiarid region of the Northeast presents fragile social indicators. In response to this, over the last decades several knowledge, experience and innovative technologies have been created by different social actors aimed towards the prospect of coexisting with the semiarid environment.

In this context, and from a systemic understanding of development, the Semear Program was created to act as a catalyst for these different types of knowledge, working towards knowledge management in an integrated manner in three subject strategic areas: productive and technological innovations; management of natural resources and climate change; and rural businesses.

Among the strategies adopted is the strengthening of collaboration and learning networks among diverse social actors, encouraging dialogue and joint action and narrowing the gap between scientific knowledge and local knowledge.

It is an IFAD’s program – International Fund for Agricultural Development , implemented by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture – IICA, supported by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation – AECID .
